It’s good news-bad news for Toledo when it comes to money in 2011. The good news comes in the form income taxes that are expected to be up about .6 million. The bad news is that other sources of revenue like property tax, estate tax, and state funds will all be down, meaning the city is expected to lose about .6 million total. That state funding is the biggest concern because the state has an estimated billion shortfall. “Our message to Gov. (Ted) Strickland or to whoever is elected governor: don’t be balancing the budget on the backs of Ohio cities,” said Patrick McLean, Director of Finance for city of Toledo. “These funds are terrible important to us.” The increase in income tax revenue is the first increase Toledo has seen since 2007.

Drew Brees takes his game into the classroom teaching high school students important lessons about financial literacy by playing Financial Football, a fast paced, interactive NFL-themed game. The Super Bowl XLIV champion and MVP announced the launch of the new version of the game September 13, 2010 at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans. Brees travelled to Bay St. Louis, MS to meet with students at Bay High School to talk about the importance of learning the basics of money management at an early age. Brees played the game with 50 students at the Mississippi high school. He coached his team to a 16-0 win over the team led by Mississippi State Treasurer Tate Reeves in an action packed game. Students also played the new game on iPads. The game is available as a free iPhone and HD iPad app on iTunes.
